If there was one place you’d expect to find the beautiful Kristen Stewart, it would be the red carpet. But sometimes it’s the most unlikely places that you find the person you love the most. That’s what happened when photographer Patrick Demarchelier met up with Kristen on the streets of New York City. In a passionate embrace, he asked her: “Why aren’t we together anymore?” She replied: “We are together, we’re just not together romantically.”

What followed was a beautiful story of passion and pride, as seen through the eyes of a master photographer. Check out the gallery to see more of Patrick Demarchelier’s work, and to see Kristen in all her glory.

‘We Are Together’

A few months after this encounter, at a Vanity Fair party in Los Angeles hosted by Lady Gaga, Stewart was photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Walking through the Los Angeles streets, the camera caught sight of a very emotional Stewart; she was wearing a black top with a white pattern and a white jacket. The portrait that followed was both haunting and sensual; behind her, the setting sun painted the skyscrapers in golden hues. At the time, Stewart and Pattinson had been dating for three years. Their relationship was now officially over; the split was amicable, and they both looked forward to moving on. But their relationship had never really been about love. It had been about art.

“When [Kristen] and I first met, she was trying to distance herself from her family and her fame,” Robert Pattinson told Vanity Fair in 2016. “She didn’t want to be compared to her family, especially since they’ve had a lot of success. She didn’t feel like she could live up to her family’s standards. So, we started working together.”

“It was never about love. It was about creating something unique and beautiful,” Kristen Stewart said of their work together. “We have so much love and respect for each other as friends.”

‘She’s Independent’

Pattinson had already shot the cover of Stewart’s first book, Chasing Clouds, which was published to critical acclaim and established her as an independent, creative force in Hollywood. As she stepped out on the town for various events throughout 2016, she was often accompanied by Pattinson. Their rapport was easy to see, and whenever possible, Stewart made the most of their joint public appearances. “She is always the strong one. I am always the one who needs protection,” Stewart said of her role as a manager of Pattinson’s career in 2016. “When we first started working together, it was a lot of adjusting to each other’s ways. But now that we’ve been together for a while, it feels comfortable, and normal.”

‘She’s Different’

In April 2017, Stewart, now 22, received her humanitarian award from French President Emmanuel Macron. While posing for photographers at the Elysée Palace, she wore a stunning black dress with a golden yellow pattern. Walking through the palace gardens, the photographer asked Stewart to hold a flower for him. When she did so, she became so immersed in the moment that she forgot about her busy schedule and about the photo shoot.

“This is real love,” the photographer said as he looked at the happy couple, who were then engaged to be married. “Nothing fake about this. Not this. Not ever.”

Pattinson’s first marriage to FKA twigs ended in 2014 in a well-documented debacle that was covered in the press. Much has been written about their difficult relationship, and even after they separated, their fights were made public. But despite all that, the Twilight actor insists that his ex-wife is still the woman he loves. In fact, he was so besotted with her that he proposed to her just weeks after their split.

‘Brilliant And Brave’

Just a few days after the Macron ceremony, Stewart was back on the red carpet. This time it was for the premiere of her latest film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Walking down the stairs in a black dress with an orange flower in her hair, she was both radiant and majestic. Directed by Woody Allen and based on the novel of the same name by Evelyn Waugh, the film is a dark compliment to the glamorous lifestyle of the city that was both the inspiration and the setting for the film. In one scene, Stewart, playing a spoiled American girl, pretends to flirt with James Franco’s character, only to throw him over when she realizes that he’s just a character in a film. The actress was clearly having a good time playing the part, and it was evident that she was enjoying herself.

“The role was very challenging,” Stewart said of her part in the film. “I had to dance a lot. It was a lot of work getting ready for that part, and there was a lot of running around during the day, getting ready for different takes. But it was worth it. The whole thing was just very challenging, but it was also a lot of fun.”

‘Independent Woman’

In January 2018, Stewart was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming only the second woman in history to receive the prestigious recognition. On the day of the ceremony, she chose to wear a black dress with a sheer veil, and she walked down the street surrounded by her family and friends. Before the ceremony, a large group of people stood in a semicircle, taking a few minutes to reflect on Stewart’s incredible career.

“My mom had just had a hip replacement, so she wasn’t able to be there, but I think she would have been really happy that I was receiving this honor,” Stewart said. “I feel like I’ve always been an independent woman, and I’ve had to be. My own career, my own money, living my own life. That’s always been my way. I’ve never really cared about what people thought about me. I think that’s probably why I’ve been so successful.”

‘She Inspires Me’

That same month, Stewart and Pattinson were married in a small, private ceremony in Rome. The happy couple chose to wear casual yet stylish ensembles, with Stewart wearing a white dress and Pattinson a gray shirt and tie. The event, which was attended by just the two of them and their families, was a touching tribute to their love and partnership. It also served as a coming-out party for their close circle of friends and family, many of whom had stayed away due to Stewart’s fear of losing her anonymity.

“The first time I met Robert, I was walking down the street and he was riding a bike with his dog on it. We struck up a conversation, and I was quite impressed by his sharp wit, and how he seemed to have so much courage. Those were the main things that I noticed about him. He’s a very unique person, and he’s inspired me in so many ways.”

Just a few days after the wedding, Stewart attended the Met Gala in New York City dressed in a custom-made gold dress by designer Stephen Burks. Accompanied by Pattinson, she was photographed all night long by the paparazzi, but the two rarely got a chance to be alone. Onlookers, who had come from near and far, thronged around them, and the two friends were soon seen laughing and smiling, enjoying each other’s company.

In July 2018, Stewart gave birth to a baby girl. The actress announced the news on Instagram, sharing a picture of her daughter in a pink dress with her husband. “We are overjoyed to announce that we are parents,” the couple said in a statement. “On June 16th, 2018, Kristen gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Lily Rose. We are so in love with this little flower!”

‘Unique And Stylish’

Last but not least, let’s not forget about Stewart’s unique sense of style. One of the most striking features about this young woman is the fact that, even at 22 years old, she already has a style all her own. It’s not manufactured or fake; it’s simply unique and stylish. It’s also safe to say that if you’re not familiar with Stewart’s work, you’ll know exactly what style she’s going for before she even strides onto the red carpet. That’s what makes her so distinctive; she has a strong, independent streak, and she’s not afraid to show it.
