It’s been a while since the news came out that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were back together. The story that followed was one of the great love stories of our time. The couple enjoyed a fairytale romance and became devoted to one another. And for the most part, the world agreed. They were regularly photographed holding hands and enjoying each other’s company. In fact, aside from a few Instagram posts with a wedding ring, the world had no idea how the couple’s relationship would continue to evolve. It wasn’t until Dec. 20, 2019, that Rob and Kristen made their marital status official. The couple tied the knot when they attended the Made in Chelsea Christmas 2019 party in London.
The news of their engagement wasn’t a huge secret. The couple attended several events together with friends and family. And as the news spread, so did the speculation. Would Rob and Kristen end up getting married? Would they make it official one more time before settling down? Would they ever divorce? It turns out, the answer to all of these questions is yes.
What is Their Marriage Licence Status?
We don’t know exactly how much thought went into the decision to finally make their marital status official. But given the chance to rekindle their romance and follow their hearts once more, it’s not difficult to understand why they decided to do so.
The short answer is that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are still married. They tied the knot in a dreamy seaside ceremony on Dec. 20, 2019, after dating for more than seven months.
The long answer involves a bit more legal jargon. In some countries, like the U.K., it’s officially called a ‘Bannable Marriage’, because getting married is one step toward ‘civil partnership’ – which is essentially a marriage without the financial responsibilities.
After tying the knot, Rob and Kristen were faced with an important decision: What would their marriage licence status be? They could legally remain ‘unmarried’, which would keep the perks associated with being an ‘independent person’. Or they could convert their union into a legal partnership, which would entitle them to the same rights and responsibilities as married couples.
Rob and Kristen decided to go for the partnership option. That way they could enjoy the perks of a married couple – like being able to stay at each other’s apartment and access their joint bank account – without the responsibility of being seen as ‘official’ or ‘married’ by the legal system. The decision also makes a lot of sense from a pragmatic standpoint. After all, they both already live a relatively independent lives. Why should they have to hide their relationship just to have the legal status of a married couple?
What happens now?
Since Rob and Kristen made their marital status public, the world has been waiting with bated breath to see what would happen next. As exciting as their reunion was, it was also bittersweet. The two had to say goodbye to their friends and family, who they have both grown close to over the years, in order to make it happen. Yet, once they did, they could finally begin to build a life together again. One that didn’t have to be kept a secret.

Based on the happy couple’s public displays of affection, it certainly doesn’t appear that Rob and Kristen are about to call it quits. In fact, it seems they may have found a way to make their relationship even more rewarding. More specifically, they want to help other LGBT+ individuals who are also in a committed relationship.
The couple has formed a new foundation, United by Courage, with the aim of providing support and help for those who suffer from low self-esteem and depression due to their sexual orientation. And so far, the response has been incredibly positive. After just two months of being established, the foundation has helped fund a youth group supporting LGBT+ young people in Uganda. They’ve also provided supplies like hair extensions and wigs for those in need, as well as trained volunteers to be able to offer support in person.

Are They Still Devoted to One Another?
Apart from the important matter of their marital status, it’s also worth wondering whether or not Rob and Kristen still feel the same way about one another as they did before their romance blossomed. We know that their feelings for one another have changed over the years. But, as entertaining and enjoyable as the last few months have been, it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that the seeds of discord were planted long ago. And it’s important to acknowledge that, as with any other marriage, disagreements are a part of the process.
The thing is, while we may never truly know what sparked the beginning of Rob and Kristen’s relationship, we do know the catalyst that ultimately led to their romance. It wasn’t until years later, after their teenage years and early 20s, that they finally found each other. By that point, they had already spent countless hours together, exploring London and the U.K. They were also a part of the same elite group of friends. Who else could have known what would happen?
What’s interesting is that throughout all the speculation and questions surrounding their relationship, it wasn’t until recently that Rob and Kristen actually admitted to their fans that yes, their feelings had changed. In an Instagram post on Dec. 31, 2019, the couple shared a sweet snap of themselves together. One that showed just how much they still care for and adore each other. Even if their feelings have evolved over the years, it’s obvious that the love they have for one another continues to grow.
“I’ve been dreaming of this day for as long as I can remember,” said Kristen, beaming as she held hands with Rob. “It’s finally here. I love you. Forever and always. And I couldn’t be more excited.”
“I love you too,” replied Rob. “And I couldn’t be more proud. To be able to stand here with you today and share this moment with you is something I will never forget.”
