Maybe this is some kind of preparation for his new role but honestly every time he talks about these things he says how uncomfortable it was, at least uncomfortable to how he was totally freaking out and miserable because of it. What I don’t get is why does he do these things if he doesn’t enjoy it, how he has to be hung-over or take a valium. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I get doing Little Ashes because he thought his career wasn’t going anywhere and wanted a fun vacation. But why work on his current project which appears to be very similar in regards to nudity and sex scenes and do photo shoots like this one. There are many other ways to challenge yourself as an actor and as an artist.
I’m sure almost all of us would like to have that kind of a moment with Rob or someone else we find so attractive or interesting but I think we would all like our moment to be private not on public display like this. Some of the stuff I get being artistic but the more overt stuff like the bathtub and the two (one is totally naked) women pressed up against each other behind rob sitting in a chair it just looks like sex to me and certainly doesn’t seem to be focused on rob either. I won’t go on though since I already commented directly under that photo since it’s the one I find most indefensible.
He needs to put at least one hand on her. It looks awkward. He has too many clothes on, not saying that he needs to be undressed, just less……like a black t-shirt or something. Oh, he should be touching her with one hand and the other hand should go behind his head, yeah, that would be right. He needs to exude more confidence.
That picture also screams paparazzi to me… the people taking photo’s have control over him.. totally dominated.. but only in this shot.. I love the others..
I get what you’re saying Ella.. it will be interesting to see how he handles his upcoming interviews as he will be deeply probed on this magazine shoot/article.. IF of course the publicists allow those questions..
Does he say he is miserable with these things? I remember reading about the valium to do the Twi audition.. I’ve only been a ‘follower’ since May last year so maybe I missed some interviews etc when he discusses how miserable he is…BEL AMI is raunch and erotica from start to finish… do you really think he has no control over his roles? why WOULD he appear in such a movie if he was so miserable and uncomfortable doing it?… to remove himself from Edward?.. to alienate some of the hoards of teens?… (he seems uncomfortable in front of screaming fans)…… I guess now is not the time we’ll find out.. it will be a few years down the line that he’ll discuss the crazy years…

I honestly think Rob is being very careful not to be typecasted or to let Hollywood or the paps create a specific image for him. In some senses, he really needs to take on roles like Bel Ami because it is such a departure from Edward, and also from Tyler who while different from Edward, is still a tortured soul. I do think he is somewhat uncomfortable with nudity/sexuality in the above context, as I know I would be if I were a man and some random woman’s breasts were dangling before my eyes, lol. But I think he also realizes that in order to grow as an actor he has to be willing to step out of the box…out of his comfort zone.
Regardless, I know I would not be able to resist kissing that man if I were straddling him like that. Good lord. If I weren’t married I would probably turn back into a 13 year old girl with pictures of Rob plastered all over my bedroom walls, lol.

Kizzie thanks for responding to what I wrote, don’t worry no personal offense taken and I certainly don’t expect people to agree with me I just mostly find his behavior confusing. I was discussing this today with a friend who is a twilight fan and a mother of two early twenty daughters who are also fans, as I’m 23 and she’s such an awesome person I’ll differ to her extra experience in life. Her thought after I mentioned this photo shoot and all the conflicting articles and statements that don’t make sense as to why he does these things was “Well I think he’s pretty messed up…” and I don’t disagree. Don’t get me wrong I think Rob is a good person but I think similar to the characters he plays he has issues that are very complicated, those characters make significant mistakes and in general don’t have things put together. That’s relatively common for men his age anyway.
So on to what you asked… I don’t think he ever said miserable but whatever he is feeling it certainly goes beyond just normal uncomfortable/awkwardness when dealing with nudity and sex scenes. I actually forgot about him taking valium for the twilight audition I was thinking about when he took it when filming Little Ashes and how he said he was freaking out about it or had a break down or something. I’m not implying that he doesn’t have control over the roles he takes; I think he’s making bad decisions about some things considering that he says something negative about the experience afterward like he did with this photo shoot. I expect he will continue to do that when he talks about doing some of the sex stuff in Bel Ami. I would be floored if all of a sudden he was okay with it all and had a relatively comfortable time handling it.
Mostly I’m confused why he would choose those roles when interviews he gives seem to point to a preference for the opposite or at least projects that don’t have nudity or hard core/erotic sex stuff. You asked “why WOULD he appear in such a movie if he was so miserable and uncomfortable doing it” and that’s my question too, I don’t get why he would do these things when he keeps complaining about it or at the least expressing un-comfort possibly extending to real suffering. When he described his reaction to filming little ashes I don’t know how to infer that as anything other then suffering from it or being miserable or something similar. I certainly think he is trying to move beyond Edward, probably not trying to alienate his “teen fans” but show that he can do roles in a variety of movie types not just big blockbuster teen kind of things. Why he is choosing to distinguish himself in this way to challenge himself doesn’t make sense. There are lots of great roles out there in films of varying size and themes and lots of things you can do in a photo shoot that can be interesting and sexy without going to the extent where his experience is unpleasant. Then again maybe this is all difficult for him, the twilight audition makes me think about that possibility but I always took his taking valium then to have more to do with nerves. It is certainly probable he could have anxiety problems though.
@ Elle……..I get the distinct impression that our Rob has some issues regarding anxiety……he has admitted that he has anxiety attacks etc……….. he ran out of the twilight premiere and went to sit in the car…….leaving his mom in the theatre!!….maybe he is thinking that if he deals with his issues head on eg, this photo shoot, little ashes, etc he will be able to overcome these problems, but this is just my opinion and he looks mighty uncomfortable in this pic so by the way!!!
oh and by the way I still love Rob to bits, problems and all…….just makes him more adorable than ever….
I’m still trying to figure out the reason for all the nudity in this layout. What is the purpose? There must be a good reason for it. He says that he’s uncomfortable with overt sexuality, yet agrees to doing the photo shoot. What am I missing here? Obviously, it’s not to advertise womens clothing! Ha!
Maybe he just does what his agent or publicist tells him to do. If that’s the case, he needs to grow a pair of balls soon because he’ll be eaten alive in Hollywood. They may act like they care about him, but it’s the money that he earns for them that they truly care about.

I can see what you are saying now and will agree with you on all of the points you’ve made. I wasn’t aware of Rob taking valium for Little Ashes!.. it seems he has a nervous disposition. He has always been self deprecating and never has come across as arrogant or disrespectful.. probably as someone who is shy by nature wouldn’t ever dream of offending anyone.. It all makes perfect sense. He was always trying to sign as many autographs and is always heard apologising to fans when he can’t stop and talk with them… I wonder if he was bullied at school… I remember reading about some kids taking the laces from his shoes.. it could be from that. He might not think he is worthy of all the attention he is receiving.. and probably dislikes being center of attention. It could just be that he gets nervous before he does anything where he has to take center stage.. where he is the focus.. In his confident interviews he is talking about someone else’s work.. the script.. his cast mate, the crew etc.. and when he talks of himself he puts himself down….
I’m in my 30’s and remember being that age clearly.. You are the same age Elle.. so you’ll realise that men mature later than women.. he is very mature in so many ways but probably needs to live a bit more to become more secure with himself…
I’m not sure why he did this photo shoot.. but we will hear the reasons when he is interviewed in the next few months.. He will be able to put everyone straight himself.

Michelle I didn’t know he had an anxiety attack at the premiere, wow I for sure think he has anxiety problems now. I can understand wanting to face things head on but he can have a perfectly wonderful career without going to the extremes of acting. Being able to handle premiers, auditions and regular sex scenes and things like that he certainly has to work on but plenty of actors and actresses don’t takes roles or do projects with hard core scenes and nudity. So it’s not like he actually has to face those things to be successful which brings me back to my confusion on why the hell he does them?
Emma, it could be that he is following the advice or guidance of agents or publicists but I think they would lean towards the teen movies anyway since there is probably more money in that then say Bel Ami. Then again they could be trying to push him to expand to difficult things in hopes of an award or something. Some of that I doubt though especially since Rob took on extra responsibilities with Remember Me, I think he is named as one of the executive producers or something. To me that suggests he’s able to make decisions all on his own and may not be affected much by good or bad influences. Either way whether pushed into or not I don’t think he is making the best decisions when it comes to these things.

I really enjoyed all of the discussions . I would like to add my opinion . I’ve been asking the very same questions WHY does he take these roles . I think the BelAmie role sounded like fun, to wear the period costumes and show off his acting skills .BUT I’m afraid to go see it . I don’t like to see him making out with anyone but Kristen and this movie sounds raunchy ,…to say the least. The photo – shoot made me sick , I think he had his eyes closed or wore sunglasses in all the scenes. I wonder what his mother said to him … I agree that whoever is advising him or controlling him is harming his career and driving his young audiences away . I still love him ( who can help it ) but his choices of roles is very disappointing . The trouble with expressing our feelings is that he will never know how worried we are about him…..
I personally think that his choice of roles is quite good….Bel Ami is a very good book and I think that if he can pull off playing GD then he can play anything!! It seems like quite a complicated role with some very good scenes (not counting the sex scenes!!). For me, I am really looking forward to seeing two particular scenes – The scene where his friend dies and the scene where he takes Madeline to introduce her to his parents for the first time after they marry……these are two very emotional scenes, I think.
As for the photoshoot – I like it…..very tastefully done, but I guess it’s each person’s perspective. I like the fact that he is fully clothed, I like the suggestiveness of it and the fact that it really does look like 80’s porn…….
Rob is more talented than he even realizes. He won’t get a shot at the roles he wants if he is seen as a heart throb. He is extremely sensitive and as he said, he felt uncomfortable and was told to do the shoot to get him used to being around sexy girls because “I’m allergic to vaginas”. Meaning-I have a natural reaction to being near sexy girls and I swell. The guy is a very young 24. He had one steady girlfriend so far and dates seldom. Kristen had (supposedly) a boyfriend during Twilight and after so they were only friends. He said in summer 2009 that they were never an item off set to Vanity Fair. They started as buddies and remained that.
Rob has been careful about his role choices. He said he knows that this is all fleeting =being the it guy and flavor of the month. He pushes himself to do roles like Little Ashes and How To Be as he is not interested in playing who he is in reality….a well brought up, grounded, decent, romantic nice English prep school young man.
I think Rob is extraordinary and as long as he is not devoured and debauched by Hollyweird—he’ll do just fine. Cheers to him!
